Becoming a Environmental Health Advocate
Environmental Health Advocates work on various fields such as social issues, political science, business, non-profit affairs, community activities etc. They detect and identify public health concerns and organize campaigns to spread awareness among the people to educate them about the protection of the environment. They work in tandem with other healthcare specialists to development programs and provide effective solutions to promote public awareness campaigns.
The public awareness campaigns may include tobacco use, drug abuse, excessive use of alcohol, unhealthy diet schedule and other activities that have adverse impact on health and environment on a whole.
Education Requirements:
Environmental Health Advocates need to be aware of the cause for which they work. It’s not about high profile academic career, but is related to their knowledge, expertise and willingness to serve the humanity and environment. Volunteer work in an organization, makes them qualify to get employment as the Environmental Health Advocates. However, a degree in Law along with Management course such as B.B.A. or M.B.A. could be an added advantage.
In-depth knowledge in English, Science, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and other medical and scientific majors, will boost the profiles of Environmental Health Advocates. They need to participate in public health improvement programs that include environmental engineering, community service, health camps, blood donation camps, charity events etc to gain further exposure.
Some states in the United States require certification while employing Environmental Health Advocates. The aspiring Environmental Health Advocates may appear in examinations to earn the certification. Although it’s not mandatory, but Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in environment health science will enhance their job prospects and increase the earning potential.
Salary & Job Outlook:
The career outlook for Environmental Health Advocates remains excellent. They get hired in non-profit sectors, social organizations and other health agencies. Apart from experience and expertise, they need to be flexible in timing and philanthropic by nature. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the profession is expected to grow by 19% during the period 2012-22. The average annual salary of an Environmental Health Advocate was $48,790 in 2012.
